We just got back from signups for the community center's summer session. I signed up both Zeke and Stazi for two sessions of swim lessons each, for a total of four weeks of swimming. Stazi is also signed up for a week-long "Little Kickers" intro to soccer camp in August and a pirate-thematic one-day thing in July. I signed Zeke up for a one-week "Dive into Literature" class where they read a different book every day, have thematic snacks and discussion, and apparently also go swimming. I suspect he will love it. Oh, and I am very excited about this one: I signed Gus up for two weeks of "Mommy and Me" swimming.
The topic of how much to schedule kids' time is one of those hot-button parenting issues that tends to make people apopletic with rage and/or smugness (can you be apoplectic with smugness? I think you can) on either side of the issue. As is my wont these days, I sail blithely on past these rocky waters and do whatever the hell I damn well feel like doing. My kids are signed up for kind of a lot of stuff this summer, but it keeps us busy and gets us out of the house, and I am no good at being a full-time stay-at-home mom. I am much better at momming when I can get out and, like, do things. Besides, my kids need to learn how to swim, and I think Stazi's pirate day is going to be a hoot.
In other news, I was at a yard sale yesterday and found a set of six plates with a multicolored striped pattern that are very close to a pattern I've had my eye on at the actual store for some time now. There were also four matching blue bowls. Price of what I wanted to buy at the store: $90.00. Price of what I bought at yard sale: $7.00. I am very pleased with this.
I also bought Zeke the Percy, James, and Diesel from the Thomas the Tank Engine train set, along with working windmill, for a total of $12. Zeke is deliriously happy about this, and I feel like an awesome mom. It was a good yard sale weekend. (My primary love language is giving gifts to people, yes; why do you ask?)

(hell, I'll go you one further: I prefer to sign them up for things that get them away from me ENTIRELY. "OH LOOK! the basketball clinic is two hours long and is just around the corner from the library! hmmm, what oh what should I doooo?")
